How do I download citations from CINAHL or PsycINFO into EndNote?

How do I download citations from CINAHL, PsycINFO, or any EBSCO database to import into my EndNote library? Do I need to create an EBSCO account to do this?

Answer

OPTION 1: Save and export results using a free EBSCO account

  • Run your search in the desired EBSCO database
  • Click the folder icon (Add to project) next to each citation you want to save. NOTE: If you're not logged in, you’ll be prompted to sign in or create a free My EBSCOhost account.
  • Select the project or create a new one
  • Click Projects under My dashboard to view your saved items
    • Select the items you want to export (You may need to scroll down to show more items)
    • Click the Export button (usually located at the top or right side of the page)
  • In the Export Manager, select Export in RIS Format
  • Follow the standard process to import into EndNote

OPTION 2: Use Save Functionality (no EBSCO account needed)

Use this option if you want to avoid creating a MyEBSCO account.

  • Run your search in the desired EBSCO database
  • Click the bookmark icon (Save) next to each citation you want to save
  • Click Saved under My dashboard
  • Click the checkbox at the top of the page to select records, then click on the Export button
  • Choose Export in RIS format
  • Follow the standard process to import into EndNote

OPTION 3: Export up to 25,000 records (may require an EBSCO account)

Use this option if you wish to export ALL the results you found into a single file to import into EndNote

  • Run your search in the desired EBSCO database
  • Go to the checkbox at the top of the page (near where the results number is shown)
  • Click on the drop-down menu and select Export results (Up to 25,000)
    • NOTE: Depending on your location, you may be required to log in to your personal MyEBSCO account
  • Fill in your email address
  • Select the RIS format
  • Click Send
  • You should receive an email from support@ebsco.com within a few minutes containing a link to the file
  • Click on the Download metadata button to save the RIS
  • Follow the standard process to import into EndNote

Email from EBSCO with .ris file from search. Shows the email, the export details, and a blue button with the words Download metadata in white letterin
