How do I find a journal's impact factor and rank?

Answer

The official source for journal impact factor is the Journal Citation Report (JCR)

You may be able to access this directly through Web of Science if you are on campus. If you are off-campus, you will need to register for a free account with Clarivate. If you have already created an account for another Clarivate product, such as EndNote, use that information to log-in. Clarivate will not allow you to have multiple accounts with one email address.

Step 1: Register for an Account

  • Go to Web of Science from the library A to Z list
  • Click on the Register button in the top right corner of the page
  • Complete the registration form. Be sure to use your @USF email address to create the account.

Step 2: Sign in to your Clarivate account

  • If you are not able to sign in, there may be an issue with your account. Contact Clarivate

Step 3: Open Journal Citation Reports

  • From Web of Science, go to Products in the top-right corner and click on Journal Citation Reports
  • You can also click on the Journal Citation Reports link from the A to Z page

Step 4: Search for the Journal

  • Search by journal title or ISSN
  • Click on the desired journal title. It should open a page about that journal.

Step 5: Find the Journal's Impact Factor

  • Scroll down the page to see the most recent impact factor for the journal
  • Scroll further to see other related metrics, such as Eigenfactor, and how the impact factor has changed over time

Step 6: Find the Journal's Rank/Quartile/Percentile

  • To get a better understanding of the journal's impact factor, look at the Rank by Journal Impact Factor section. This shows you how the journal compares to others in its category.
